Calamus oil extract from the fresh roots or unpeeled dried roots from the (Acorus calamus) plant. It has a warm and spicy scant. The calamus rtiizomes have been used in many different ways. It has been used medicinally for its relaxant, spasmolylic and hypertensive properties. Its essential oil is reported to have spasmoylic neuron pharmacological and antibacterial activity. The oil is obtained by the steam distillation. Calamus oil is widely used in flavours for liquors as well as in fine penuries caimans.

  • Use: Calamus Essential oil from rhizome is used for preparation of aromatic cordials liqueurs, beer, in perfume and dental preparations. It is also used in herbal medicine as aromatic bitter and act removing discomfort caused by flatulence bacterial problems. Calamus oil In Ayurvedic system of medicine the rezones are considered to possess anti-spasmodic carminative, anathematic properties. The oil is used I cure many disorders such as epilepsy and mental diseases. Due to high Asarone percentage this oil is useful in mental ailment (Menon Dandya-1967), as an insecticide (Mukergee Govind-1960), in Ayurvedic System of Indian Medicines (Nandkarni-1954), as an stimulant, emetic, nauseant, stomachic, aromatic, expectorant, carminative, antispasmodic, and nervine sedative. Due to its insecticidal activity it has been used in combination with Neem Oil, cedar wood oil as Room Sprayer against house hold insect. Its use has been restricted by IFRA due to high percentage of Asarone in Indian Calamus Oil. A high concentrations (0.5%) of b-Asarone have been shown to be positive in Ames mutagenic test following activation (WHO-FAZ, 1981). Recently to enhance memory it is being used in a drug called megamind plus.
